What is slaked lime?

Slaked lime, also called calcium hydroxide, is a white, powdery substance made by adding water to quicklime, which is created by burning limestone or other minerals that contain calcium carbonate. When water is added to quicklime, a chemical reaction occurs, releasing heat and producing slaked lime. This reaction is called slaking.

Slaked lime has many uses, including in agriculture, construction, and water treatment. In agriculture, it is used to neutralize acidic soils, improve soil structure, and reduce plant diseases. In construction, it is used as a mortar in masonry and as a stabilizing agent in soil. In water treatment, it is used to soften water and remove impurities.

Slaked lime is also a common ingredient in many household products, such as toothpaste, antacids, and hair dye. It is safe to handle and use, but can be irritant to the skin and eyes when not handled carefully.
